This page describes the annual Edinburgh JMCS subscription rates, and how and when to pay them.
Club Membership Year
The club membership year now runs from 1 April to 31 March.
This is the same as the Mountaineering Scotland (MS) membership year for affiliated clubs, which simplifies our affiliation to MS.
So, current members should pay in April, once the club membership year has started.
Subscription rates for current members for 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027
There are two subscription rates, depending on whether or not you are a member of MS (either as an individual or as a member of another club affiliated to MS).
If anyone is interested, there are some notes below about MS affiliation and how these subscription rates are arrived at.

Subscription rates for new members who join part way through the membership year
Rates for new members who join part way through the year are reduced on a pro rata basis, depending on the month of joining.

- These pro rata reduced rates are only for new members who join part way through the membership year – current members do not get a discount for paying late!
How to pay the subscription.

Please observe the following points mentioned there.
Doing so will make it a lot easier for the Treasurer to keep track of over 100 annual payins, of varying amounts!
- Use ‘surname subs‘ as the transfer ‘reference’, where ‘surname’ is your surname, and the exact word ‘subs’ helps with sorting the bank statement entries into the right categories (there are over 100 payins to process!).
- After making the payment, fill in the subscriptions form (don’t fill in the form and then forget to make the payment…).

New members should also fill in the
contact details form.
Current members do not need to fill in this form when renewing membership since we already have these details.
Some notes on MS affiliation and the subscription rates
- The MS Affiliated Club Membership Subscription for 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027 is £38.75

The Full JMCS Subscription consists of the Reduced JMCS Subscription (which we keep) plus the MS Subscription (which we pay to MS).
That is: £12.00 + £38.75 = £40.75
In other words, we keep £12.00 from each member – the rest goes to MS! -
It is a condition of the JMCS affiliation to MS (and hence our insurance policy with MS) that all JMCS members must be affiliated to MS either via JMCS or, alternatively, via some other club or as individuals.
In fact, when the club renews its affiliation to MS we send a membership list to MS, who then check that all members are affiliated to them somehow. - So, members cannot just decide that they don’t want to be in MS and pay us the reduced rate without being a member of MS some other way.
- Furthermore, if your alternative membership of MS lapses during the JMCS membership year you will have to pay a pro-rata subscription to JMCS to affiliate you to MS for the remainder of the year. Please contact the treasurer to discuss this.
